Hydrogen is a major constituent of any life form and represents more than three of every five atoms in animal species, and just under half of all the atoms in plants. Hydrogen, both its protons and electrons, appears to not only enable, but also optimise energy production by the mitochondria. The significance of Hydr-Oxygen in biology cannot be underestimated as it is part of the very first step in mitochondrial function as well as the last, be it part of a proton pump, the transfer of electrons, and the completion of redox balance and homeostasis.

While the global hydrogen focus seems to be around energy production to power our transport and service needs, we believe the big story is its relevance to biology and its role in all living things. The total value of the hydrogen energy sector (an estimated 8 trillion dollars) pales compared to the 100 trillion dollars plus estimate when considering the relevance associated with the hydrogen biology sector. The significance and diversity of this must not be underestimated. The use of hydrogen and oxygen supplementation will define improvements in food production and health for the next hundred years.

It was first suggested with humour in Nature (1996) as a natural antioxidant and selective scavenger of oxygen free radicals to treat oxidative stress. More recently, it has been broadly indicated that molecular Hydrogen exerts its biological effects in two major ways. The first one is scavenging free radicals, and the other is modulating specific gene expression or signalling pathways, both in animals and plants. Molecular Hydrogen has been demonstrated to induce change in gene expression leading to anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic responses in all organisms tested without any detrimental side effects. Thus, molecular Hydrogen enables the organism to reduce and withstand stress longer and better while thriving.

However, the latest discovery takes this even further and indicates that it is at the core of multicellular life that is positively affected. Molecular hydrogen could be donating electrons in the Q chamber of complex I to the ubiquinone, thereby shortening the electron transfer chain in complex I. Consequently, the production of superoxide radicals by this complex decreases while the proton pump activity is maintained. Molecular hydrogen, both the protons and electrons, supplemented to the mitochondria and complex I, ultimately results in a proton gradient increase, and the increased proton gradient generated will result in an increased production of ATP.

The mitochondrion is the main source of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) and is an essential organelle of plants, animals and fungi that divide independently from the cells, and have their own genome. Their primary function is to provide energy to the cell in the form of ATP using oxygen by a process called cellular respiration. In addition, mitochondria are also involved in other critical tasks, such as signalling, maintaining control of the cell cycle, cell growth, cellular differentiation, and even cell death. There are an estimated 37.2 trillion cells in the body, and each cell contains between 2 and 2500 mitochondria, each possessing a 17000 ATP assembly line. It is estimated that there are about 10 million billion (10,000 trillion) mitochondria in an adult human, for example!

Molecular hydrogen supplementation can increase mitochondrial ATP production by more than 50% while decreasing the production of superoxide by the first respiratory complex. The ability to increase the production of ATP while reducing the production of reactive oxygen species, thus reducing the need to repair the damage they cause, represents an advancement in biology that could not be more relevant in today’s world with peer-reviewed scientific documents now running into the thousands. Taken collectively, they clearly identify that hydrogen deficiency in biological organisms, costs the world well over 100 trillion dollars in lost income every year. It underpins the health potential and lifespan of all things, and ultimately our entire biosphere (including its climate) as we know it.

The enormous potential that Molecular Hydrogen and Oxygen supplementation has identified to affect and determine outcomes for includes:

At this level, the vast majority of life all works the same way, and it is in the mitochondrion where we find the critical function of life independent of species.

Mitochondrial Function

The mitochondrion is an essential organelle of plants, animals and fungi that divide independently from the cells, and have their own genome. Their primary function is to provide energy to the cell in the form of ATP (adenosine triphosphate) using oxygen by a process called cellular respiration. In addition to supplying cellular energy, mitochondria are involved in other tasks, such as signalling, cellular differentiation, maintaining control of the cell cycle, and cell death. Cellular respiration is a catabolic pathway that breaks down glucose and other molecules to produce ATP ultimately. The stages of cellular respiration include glycolysis, pyruvate oxidation, the citric acid or Krebs cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation that uses oxygen as a terminal electron acceptor. However, the process is very complex and sensitive and is at the origin of the accidental production of reactive oxygen species. Thus, the mitochondrion is also the centre of oxidative stress where the most potent free radical, the hydroxyl radical, is produced.

It has been shown that Hydrogen gas could scavenge the hydroxyl radical in live cells resulting in a decrease of oxidative stress in vivo, furthermore, it is demonstrated that H2 supplementation suppressed superoxide production by complex I. It is proposed that H2 could donate electrons in the Q chamber which identifies that Complex I could be using H2 directly to enable the pumping of protons from the matrix to the intermembrane space, increasing the potential ATP production without using substrate originating from the degradation of glucose, with suggestion that an increase of more than 50% in ATP production can be achieved in the presence of H2 compared to control.

Oxidative Stress

Oxidative Stress refers to elevated intracellular levels of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) that cause damage to lipids, proteins and DNA. Oxidative stress results from an imbalance of ROS and antioxidants in a living organism, such as alpha-lipoic acid, glutathione and hydrogen. Oxidative stress occurs naturally as the result of the normal function of the organism but can also be potentiated by environmental and pathological pressures while also playing a direct role in the ageing process. Reactive oxygen species are molecules that “want” to capture electrons from others to stabilise themselves. Because they are highly reactive, they will steal electrons from any source close to them, such as proteins and DNA, which damages the stability and function of the donating molecule. The primary cellular source of ROS is the mitochondria. In response to this, antioxidants are molecules that can donate electrons without becoming reactive themselves. Antioxidants stop the oxidation pathway by “reducing” the oxidant, and preventing damage.

One such powerful antioxidant that can passively diffuse through the living body (or plant) at great speed is molecular Hydrogen. Furthermore, organisms produce the enzymes Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) and Catalase, which catalyse the safe conversion of superoxide into molecular oxygen and oxygen peroxide. At the same time, the catalase converts hydrogen peroxide into water and molecular oxygen. Interestingly, exposure to hydrogen increases the activity of both enzymes significantly, further potentiating the antioxidant system.

Inflammation

Inflammation is a generic response of body tissue following damage to cells or the detection of potential damaging effectors. Both infectious and non-infectious agents, as well as cellular injury, can activate an inflammatory response. The response is generic because it doesn’t distinguish between the possible causes. The inflammatory response removes harmful stimuli and initiates the healing process while involving immune and circulatory systems. However, it is a balancing act that can go awry. Molecular Hydrogen supplementation acts against inflammation in two synergistic ways. The first is associated with oxidative stress, which can initiate or sustain an inflammatory response. Since Molecular Hydrogen is a powerful antioxidant, it suppresses the oxidative stress signal and reduces the risk of unnecessarily triggering or over sustaining an inflammatory response. And second, all pathways to inflammation pass through the activation of the NF-kB pathway. Molecular hydrogen dampens the NF-kB pathway, directly avoiding a highly detrimental runaway inflammatory response.

NF-kB

NF-kB (nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells) is a protein complex that controls transcription of DNA, cytokine production and cell survival. NF-κB is found in almost all animal cell types and is involved in cellular responses to stimuli such as stress, cytokines, free radicals, heavy metals, ultraviolet irradiation and bacterial or viral antigens. It also plays a crucial role in regulating the immune response to infection. Thus, incorrect regulation of NF-κB is linked to many challenges such as inflammatory and autoimmune responses, sepsis, viral infection, and improper immune development. Although the inflammatory response is essential, it can become self-sustaining and become a problem as inflammation causes oxidative stress, and oxidative stress causes inflammation.

Immune Cells

Long-lasting immune challenges result in abnormally high exhaustion rates of immune cells that ultimately lead to their death. Recently, it has been demonstrated that immune cell exhaustion was caused by mitochondrial dysfunction associated with increased reactive oxygen species, such as the hydroxyl radical and superoxide. Immune cell exhaustion is linked to a decrease in mitophagy and an accumulation of dysfunctional depolarised mitochondria. Yet again, we see that supplementation with molecular hydrogen maintains or helps restore the mitochondrial inner membrane polarisation by enabling proton pumping in complex I while decreasing ROS production by the same complex and increasing ATP production. Furthermore, molecular hydrogen supplementation promotes the expression of superoxide dismutase and catalase, further reducing the ROS level and upregulating the PINK1/parkin pathway that enables mitophagy.

The Beneficial Action of Molecular Hydrogen

Since 2007, around 2,000 research papers have demonstrated that Molecular Hydrogen has both anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects throughout a broad range of biological applications and species. Molecular Hydrogen acts as a powerful antioxidant in biological systems both directly and indirectly. Directly by scavenging some Reactive Oxygen Species, and indirectly by boosting natural antioxidant systems. Molecular Hydrogen dampens the NF-kB pathway in normal cells, helping to bring about healing by decreasing inflammation. Hydrogen atoms generally represent 62% of all the atoms in terrestrial bodies. That’s more than 3 out of every 5.

Our entire planet awaits the biological benefit potential of molecular hydrogen and Oxygen supplementation on what will be a grand scale. In poultry, fish, animals, etc… Molecular Hydrogen has been shown to significantly improve mitochondrial function, ATP production, the immune response, decrease oxidative stress, reduce and manage inflammation, considerably improve growth rate, and enhance disease resistance capabilities.

Hydrogen supplementation can improve livestock health, growth rate, and feed conversion ratio such as poultry. A 10-15% increase in weight can be achieved along with an improvement in meat quality while decreasing stimulant and biotic intervention. In aquatic species, increased yields of 30-40% are seen as growth rates rise and mortality decreases. In plants, treatment with hydrogen-enriched water increases yield, salt and heavy metal resilience, flowering potential and fruit set. An increase in H2 in the rhizosphere led to beneficial impacts for subsequent plant growth resulting in a 15–48% biomass increase in plants and termed a hydrogen fertilisation effect. It represents a low-cost solution to improve the nutritional content and enhance production under abiotic stresses, such as drought and salinity, throughout all agricultural endeavours.

We believe that the biological relevance of Molecular Hydrogen represents the single most important technology on the planet today. The progression towards this technology is inevitable, and in these very challenging times, the need is pressing and relevant for all governments the world over.

Hydrogen and oxygen have been intrinsically involved with the evolution of life in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes (e.g. hydrogenases, hydrogenosomes, mitochondria, etc.), and we are at the leading edge of a new understanding of biology. A common theme has already emerged: the supplementation of Molecular Hydrogen into biological systems has a complementary beneficial effect on the entire system. Bushfire Recovery Technologies

Here in Australia we are experiencing our worst ever summer of wildfires and it is heartbreaking to see what is happening to our country night after night on the news. Lives are being lost, thousands of homes razed, millions of hectares of land destroyed, and estimates beyond half a billion animals have perished. The end is not yet in sight and more losses are expected. Life is not expected to ever be the same for the tens of thousands effected by this disaster.

The generosity from around the world has been astounding but this will be a long and drawn out process and recovery will be slow. There are many who are helping people and communities but there is the immediate need to address the devastation of wildlife which is experiencing unimaginable suffering and may never fully recover. We feel compelled to help in any way possible, and are working hard to complete projects that will have a dramatic positive effect in so many different ways and for so many different species. 

We are a proud Australian company focused on the health of all creatures great and small. It is clear to us that we have technology available to us that can make very real impact on the front line of this unfolding catastrophe.

The application of hydrogen rich water to the surviving wildlife is by far the most effective first aid treatment that these animals can receive. It will directly and immediately address the massive inflammation and trauma that is determining life or death at that time. Its ability to assist the skin to repair and heal is astounding and the high hydrogen and oxygen content of the enriched water significantly favours the aerobic nature of these animals and boosts the ability to resist the anaerobic viruses and bacteria that cause infection and disease.

It is critical that the recovery of the earth itself includes the bio-diverse organisms in the soil that in turn feed the plants the essential nutrients and life-giving fundamentals that allow for plant life. As we all know, poor soil results in poor plants and these fires have now voided much of the life in the ground. The insects are gone, the worms are gone and the birds and animals that have survived the fires now have nothing to eat. When there finally is plant life re-emerging in the seasons to come, we will need the bees to pollinate, but sadly they too have been lost. The entire food chain in many cases has been lost and must begin again, literally from the ground up.

It has been estimated that on a place called Kangaroo Island, where the healthiest Koalas in the world live, approximately 50% of their 50,000 strong population has been lost. The devastation of the land is such that there are very real fears that they may not recover. It is heartbreaking to see these gentle creatures in such a state and on such a massive scale. Kangaroos, Wallabies, Echidnas and countless other species have been decimated and yet these fires still rage. It is early summer here and there are hundreds of fires raging across the country which have been fought for more than three months already.

Time is not on our side and there is so much to do. There are less than a handful of companies in the world that can assist with the recovery of life such as we are able to do. We at Hydrogen Technologies can build the machines needed to be donated to the many institutions and animal hospitals currently inundated with wildlife needing care. Water supplying infrastructure needs to be built and rebuilt to enable access to life in our already drought-stricken country. Pumping stations, irrigation and water enrichment infrastructure needs to be addressed as a major priority to limit the severity of the scarring that our country will have to bear. Thousands of beehives will need to be built to provide accommodation for nature to return and do her thing. We have the knowledge of how nature works and now more than ever, we need to work with her in what will ultimately affect us all in some way or another, either now or in the future.

This is a massive task and one that will take many thousands of people to address. It is one that our country has not seen before, and it is one that we fear will not be the last for our world. The signs have been there for all to see for quite some time and whether it be man-made or environmental, the fact is that it has, and is happening. The blame game can be debated later, but the most important thing remains and that is that something is actioned, and it is actioned now. This will take a phenomenal amount of money to address, and it is only as a collective global group that we will be able to get this done. Together we can make a real difference.

Our fires continue to rage and sadly there is still more to come before we really see what devastation and consequences we are left to deal with. There will be many lessons learned and new methods, protocols and technologies applied during this recovery period, all of which can be implemented as required anywhere in the world should the need arise. Sadly, we believe that this will not be an isolated incident and inevitably, the need will arise again.

Please help us to help our flora, our fauna, our country, our earth. We have so much to do and we need to start as soon as we can. These are terrible times and we hope that together we can achieve great things. We are a good company and can provide real solutions but unfortunately we can not do this alone, and we can not just sit back and do nothing either. At the very least we must act on our values, Respect – Integrity and Courage. Together we are stronger.

We are all in this together!

For the past five years or so, we have tried our best to share our knowledge about the developing understanding of just how important hydrogen is for virtually all living things. For many species throughout the world, hydrogen represents a little over 3 out of every 5 atoms in the body, and if the internal system is not capable of keeping up with the production required by that body or organism, it simply deteriorates to the point of death and decomposes like an apple once it has been picked from the tree. There is no stopping it, there is no cheating it, it is simply the way of life itself.

The scientific evidence continues to build with more and more studies being completed all the time. No one is disputing the results and the consistency of these results being produced time and time again from so many different research bodies, and from so many different countries, suggests that we are at the beginning of what will inevitability be an entire shift in understanding how health is managed across the entire globe.

This sends a powerful message to the Agrochemical industry that they are legally and financially responsible for the adverse effects of their products, despite receiving a regulatory pass from government agencies. It opens the door for more lawsuits and stricter regulation of agrochemicals in the future. It is said that a class action lawsuit involving 8,700 plaintiffs believed to have cancer as a result of glyphosate exposure, could expose Bayer/Monsanto to an 800 billion dollar liability.

Molecular Hydrogen supplementation may very well be the answer…

Healthy soil is full of life and represents an ecosystem all of its own, a micro climate if you will – it is not just carbon, minerals and matter. The logic behind the saying “a healthy gut results in a healthy human” can also be adequately applied to the theory of “healthy soil results in healthy plants”. But we also need to take that further as it is the life that the soil enables that underpins the vast majority of what we call the “Food Chain”. The biota in the soil along with organic matter to feed it, mineral content, gasses and moisture, all combine to create an environment that can then support life and from there, even more life. Everything that lives has to feed from something that has lived, and to think that we can short cut a few steps and remove a few links from this chain of events, is fanciful and potentially fateful.

Great soil = great plants and an abundance of life. Poor soil = poor plants and limited life. When it comes to soil, the mineral content and availability of trace elements is vitally important yes, but it is the ability for complementary life forms to be able to live in the soil that will ultimately determine potential.

The right density, water absorption capacity, water retention capabilities such as organic matter and shade, composting capabilities and the ability to breathe are all general concepts that we look for when determining soil health. Hydrogen is essential in all life and it is here in healthy soil that this gas is produced and made available to the plant. The more hydrogen it is capable of producing, the more life it can ultimately support.

A substantial volume of evidence is proving that molecular hydrogen is able to assist with many aspects of plant growth, root development and stress responses due to the varying challenges it faces. Many of these challenges can be traced back to the soil, the microbial life within it, and the ability for that microbial life to produce hydrogen. Salinity for example creates an environment that is inhospitable for these microbes to live in, consequently reducing the plants access to the life giving by-product the soil microbes would normally provide. This in turn significantly hinders the ability of the plant to survive in these less favourable conditions.

The recipe of life has many facets and supplementing essential gasses into the soil that is deficient in microbial life due to drought, heat or salinity issues can bring back life where hope was once lost. For soil to be healthy enough to support the lives of the plants growing in it and of the animals that live on it, it is imperative that the essential gases of life can either be produced within the soil or can at least be supplemented into it. Aerobic life must come from an aerobic environment and to think otherwise is fanciful. All life starts the same way with cells dividing and multiplying again and again, and if its environment is not able to support this process, then it will stress, abort, and die.

“Soil Health” can be characterised by its ability to create the sustainable aerobic environment, nutrients and gasses that support life. Our entire planet depends on this vital living system. It is the microbes in the soil that facilitate the processes required to create that environment and with the death of the microbes, as is the case with herbicide and pesticide usage, so too ensuring the death of the soil environment and virtually all that comes from it.

It is from the soil that life as we know it has evolved. The quality of that soil has been responsible for all that its’ environment can produce throughout all of history. It too will be responsible for all that its’ environment can produce into the future, make no mistake.

  • Clearing it, exposes it

Forcing change upon an environment will undoubtedly change what can live there. Altering the food supply of the micro-organisms in the soil will of course have consequences for those organisms and the biodiversity that manages dis-ease.

  • Poisoning it, kills it

Whatever is added, goes into the mix of life. Chemicals and potions that are designed to kill, will do exactly that. Perhaps slowly, but ultimately and inevitably, there will be no life left and the land will die. What can take tens of thousands of years to produce can be killed in just 30 or 40. If we keep this up, then us humans as a species are in all sorts of trouble.

  • Supplementing the gasses brings back an environment that supports life

We know what to do about sustainable land and soil management, and it is just a matter of doing it. To stop poisoning and killing the microbes in the soil is the first thing, with the creation of a favourable aerobic environment right behind it. This will allow organic matter to grow, roots to develop, and regeneration to begin. Supplementing essential gasses by infusing into the existing watering system as the delivery method, has the potential to change the world.

Regenerative farming ultimately means that the methods used are able to sustain the healthy living ecosystem of that farm, either in it, on it, or from it. Chemical free results are easily achieved when multiple crops and produce are introduced to complement each other in rotation and combination. Clean and natural from the microbiota in the soil, all the way through to the plate in front of you and your family.

  • Humans are the top of the food chain

Whatever it is that we consume from the soil to sustain life, itself must come from the life within the soil where it also grew. We are what we eat they say, and whatever we do to the soil, we also do to ourselves. Dis-ease is a consequence manifesting at a weak point for whatever reason, but it is from our food where health and strength comes from, and it will only ever be as good as the environment it came from. The single biggest elements of life (hydrogen, oxygen, carbon and nitrogen) are what everything else is built on, and the ability of an organism to produce it, or access it, determines everything else.
